We all know that God wants us to grow, to mature, to become the people he made us to be.  Does God want us to change fast, like the apostle Paul on the road to Damascus?  Does God want us to grow more slowly, gradually, incrementally?

You could make the argument that Paul is a model for how God wants us to grow.  People who move in a new direction have the most energy at that very moment.  If they slow down, they also cool off.  Slow and steady can be a cover for not growing at all.  Paul was converted to the way of Jesus and immediately he was preaching about Jesus, and quite effectively.  Paul is a model for us.  Fast track growth is the way to go.

On the other hand, you could make the case that it is better to grow slowly.  People who mature slowly have greater staying power.  They understand more.  They have deeper roots.  Slow growth allows for the development of relationships which encourage us and hold us accountable as we grow.  Paul is not a model for us.  Slow growth is the way to go.

Is Paul a model for us or not?  Is it better to grow quickly or slowly?  Depends on the person.  What counts is not how fast we change.  We counts is that we say yes to God.
