In this life there are some things we need to learn and then unlearn. First we learn that we get what we deserve. Then we unlearn it and learn instead that we get better than we deserve.
First we have to learn that we get what we deserve. It’s called growing up, maturing, becoming responsible people. We move past magical thinking into an understanding of cause and effect. We develop the personal discipline and the vocational skills and the interpersonal skills we need to have the life we want to have. We get what we deserve.
Then we unlearn what we had learned, and in its place we learn that we get better than we deserve. Maybe we see it in the beauty of the world God has made. Maybe we consider the mistakes we have made and conclude we wound up in a better place than we could have expected. Maybe at one point our life fell apart and we got a second chance. However we get there, we come to the conclusion that we get better than we deserve.
In our sermon this Sunday we will talk about how God is good, and the evidence is that we get better than we deserve.
