Debt is the devil. Debt will make a person do things they otherwise would not do. As the Proverb says, “The borrower is slave to the lender.” No one ones to be a slave. We want to be free to live the life we want to be have. We want to be free to take care of the people God has put into our lives. We want to be free to serve the place God has put us. We can’t do any of these things if we are staggering under the burden of crushing debt.

To free ourselves from debt, we expand upon the rule of holes. The first step is to not dig the hole in the first place. Wise people understand that building wealth is a lifelong project. Desiring what you want before you can afford it is the path to ruin. Don’t dig the hole. The second step is to stop digging. When you find yourself in too much debt, change your behavior. Convince yourself that you don’t need to have everything you think you need to have. Practice some self-control. Do without. The third step is to climb out of the hole. Make a plan off your debt and work the plan. It may seem like slow going at first, but it will pay off. The reward is freedom.

In our sermon this Sunday we will talk about how debt is the devil.
