No part of the Bible is known better than the 23rd Psalm. It is featured in literature, music, and movies. You never go to a funeral without hearing it. Today let’s look at one particular line of the Psalm: “My cup overflows.”
God provides. Ancient people tended to know this better than we do. We think of God helping us with our anxieties and doubts and our desire for meaning and purpose. The ancients knew they depended on God for life and all that sustains life. God provides.
God provides more than enough. God gives generously, extravagantly, excessively. This is important, because people tend to have either a scarcity mindset or an abundance mindset. People with a scarcity mindset live fearfully. They cannot afford to be generous, or so they think. People with an abundance mindset trust that there is always enough. They know they can afford to be generous. God provides more than enough.
Jesus is the good shepherd. The 23rd Psalm is about Jesus. Everything in the Bible points to Jesus, and this poem is no exception. Every line in the 23rd line describes Jesus. People who trust in Jesus live with confidence than they will have enough, that they will enjoy an abundance of blessing, and that their cup overflows.
