“Be still and know that I am God.” -Psalm 46:8
The words mean one thing to God’s people and another to their enemies.
To God’s people, the words are an invitation. They give reassurance. They guide a believer to prayer, to silence, to listening for a word from the Lord. God’s people have long believed in the power of prayer. They trust that if one sits quietly in the presence of God, on a regular basis, they will hear the voice of God. They need only learn to be still.
To their enemies, the words are an imperative. They hear “Be still,” as “Stand down.” This is Jesus calming the storm, telling the wind and the waves to be still, and they do. “Be still” expresses the power of God, stronger than our enemies, capable of calming any storm around us or within us.
In our sermon this Sunday we will talk about learning to be still.
